What’s the best book you read in the last five years? Or ever? Or in the last week?

I need to load up my Nook for the next three weeks. With a full 24-hours (one way!) of travel time plus downtime on the ol’ hmoon and the return trip, I need…a lot. And I want a lot more than the current Bestseller list.

I grabbed the last rotisserie chicken at the grocery.

The kid behind the counter said “must be your lucky night.”

I held that beautiful golden protein-filled chicken (that I didn’t have to cook) high above my head and said WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!…perhaps a touch too enthusiastically because he just looked at me like a weirdo who was definitely not funny.

Tonight I Ran.

Today I hated my job; disliked my body; got overwhelmed by my to-do list; and missed my grandfather.

Today I resented the media for being so god damn irresponsible and hated politics for being so god damn cynical.

Today I felt sad.

So I ran.

I did it for me, make no mistake. But I was propelled by thoughts that there are three people who will never feel sad or have a bad day again; that there are dozens more who will no longer have the gift to walk—let alone run—again; that there are individuals and families who can’t close their eyes without remembering what they saw or how it felt again.

There have been a lot of posts that say Today I Ran.

Tonight I am one of them. And while there’s a whole host of diverse reasons and feelings behind each step for each person, there is something of comfort in knowing that there is also unity and camaraderie and support and bravery in them too.

Chicago…I’m a comin’ for you!

Tonight we head to Chi to see friends, hug family, and play with babies. (It’s the babies I’m most excited about.)

I’ve never actually been to Chicago just for fun. I mean, it’s always fun…but it’s always tied to events or a group visit. I’ve never picked a restaurant or had downtime to bop around.

So what are the gottadoits, cantmissits and omgeatits on your Chicago list?

True story: I have known Dabney (she’s on the right there) since I was one day old. Inversely put, I have never not known Dabs. Weird, right? And cool. Definitely cool.

For the last 28.8 years this is always how she looks: happy. smiley. with her bathing suit on backwards (sometimes).

And I think I always look at her with that squished up face one part in confusion about where her red hair came from, but, like, four parts in wonder at how one person can be so, terribly special.

Just wanted to tell you I love you, Dabby. So…I LOVE YOU!

(PS: I’m pretty sure my grandmother is holding a beer in the background. Atta, girl.)
